چکیده

Recently Beaufils published a monograph entitled Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) in which he presented complete details of his experimental approach and plantlenvironment calibration technique for the first time. One of the cardinal points of this diagnostic technique is that it should be applicable to a particular crop grown at any place at, any stage of its development. The concepts of this experimental approach and diagnostic technique were originally developed for rubber trees in Vietnam; they were then adapted to maize in the southern part of Africa. After further expansion to potatoes, application of these concepts is now being developed for sugarcane. In this paper preliminary observations on the sensitivity and general applicability of this system to sugarcane are presented. From data on leaf composition and yield obtained from growers in the South African Sugar Industry by means of a survey, a provisional standard chart for the determination of N P K requirements of sugarcane has been established. An evaluation of this chart has been made by application to data obtained either from the literature or the S.A. Sugar Association Experiment Station, Mount Edgecombe. At this early stage it appears that one can reasonably expect an improved sensitivity in the diagnosis of N and P requirements of sugarcane as well as the possibility of diagnosing N P K requirements at any stage of development irrespective of moisture status, season and variety.

EFFECT OF TIME OF SAMPLING ON THE DIAGNOSIS OF THE N, P, K, Ca, AND Mg REQUIREMENTS OF SUGARCANE BY THE DRIS APPROACH

A 3, NPK lime factorial experiment is used as a means of testing both soil and leaf norms for sugarcane obtained by the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) developed by Beaufils. ,Soil and leaf samples were taken from the experiment when the cane was 3, 6, 12 and 18 months old respectively and analysed for a number of essential plant nutrients. The results show that these norm...

Organic Manures and Crop Residues as Fertilizer Substitutes: Impact on Nitrous Oxide Emission, Plant Growth and Grain Yield in Pre-Monsoon Rice Cropping System

It has been previously argued that application of organic residues added in soils has a great impact on soil quality, grain productivity as well as greenhouse gas emissions. Substitution of chemical fertilizers has become a common practice in agricultural systems which consequently affect the greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural fields. To observe the effects of organic manures and crop r...

Utilisation of distillery effluent in coastal sandy soil to improve soil fertility and yield of sugarcane

Coastal sandy soil is characterised by low fertility and poor physical properties. Distillery effluent, a liquid waste from the distillery industry contains large quantities of soluble organic matter and plant nutrients. It does not contain any toxic elements / compounds. In order to improve the physical properties and fertility of the coastal soil by utilising the distillery effluent, field ex...

Effects of NPK fertilizer and season on the flowering and sex expression of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo Linn.)

Effects of NPK 15:15:15 compound fertilizer and planting season on flowering and sex expression of pumpkin were analyzed at the Teaching and Research Farm, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria in year 2010. Results deciphered that day to 50% flowering, number of male and female flowers responded to season than fertilizer rates. Late season planting reached 50% flowering 5 days earlier t...
